Mr. Tick received his B.A. from McMaster University in 1960 and his LL.B. from Osgoode Law School in 1963. He was called to the Bar, with Honours, in l965.
He has practised civil tort insurance and commercial litigation for over 42 years, representing both plaintiffs and defendants, as well as general, life, health, and property insurers. Mr. Tick was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1981, and was certified in 1988 by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Civil Litigation.
He is routinely called upon by legal counsel in the community to provide guidance and case management support in the area of civil litigation. His main areas of focus include personal injury, products liability, wrongful dismissal, and medical and professional malpractice. In addition to experience as a civil litigator in all forms of cases, Mr. Tick has acted as a narcotics prosecutor for the Federal Government for l5 years, which has allowed him to develop investigative skills frequently utilised in civil litigation.
Mr. Tick has appeared before all levels of Ontario courts and is actively engaged in Alternative Dispute Resolution, having received advanced training from the Harvard Law School Mediation Centre. He is known for his exemplary negotiation and mediation skills, and is highly effective in resolving disputes and ensuring his clients' legal interests are fully protected.
Mr. Tick has lectured to many groups over the past 30 years, including, amongst others, the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Advocates' Society, and Insight, as well as to a number of insurance company claims departments and other legal and medical groups. He has served as a member of numerous professional legal associations, and has taken a leadership role in many, having been a director of the Advocates' Society of Ontario and a trustee of the Hamilton Law Association.
Mr. Tick's knowledge, skills, and experience are complemented by those of his team of dedicated lawyers, legal assistants, law clerks, investigators, and researchers, who together strive to provide the best possible product for each client.
In addition to his dedication to the law and client service, Mr. Tick is also dedicated to his community. Both he as an individual and his firm as whole actively support local community groups, organisations, and charities, whether it be through cash donations, the pro bono provision of legal services, or active participation in organising community initiatives and events.
For his support of and contributions to his community, and for his numerous accomplishments which have bettered the work of lawyers in our society, Mr. Tick was awarded in 1996 the Law Society of Upper Canada's Bicentennial Award of Merit.
